Older than Belgium itself

The Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK) is the oldest museum in Belgium – at 225 years old, it goes back further than Belgium itself. Its collection never fails to impress: old masters such as Bosch, Van Dyck or Rubens are on view alongside modern artists such as Ensor, Rodin or Magritte. In the heart of the museum is an open workshop where visitors can witness the ongoing restoration of 8 panels of Jan van Eyck’s world-renowned Ghent Altarpiece.

Meeting among the materpieces

The museum is housed in a listed building from the early 1900s. Several authentic period rooms are available for meetings and events: the spacious Forum, the recently refurbished Auditorium, the charming Hemicycle, the covered Patio... And why not book an exclusive late-night opening so your guests can discover the MSK’s collections? You can even rent some of the exhibition rooms and organize your meeting or event among the masterpieces. Imagine welcoming visitors below ‘The Human Passions’, a relief by the sculptor Jef Lambeaux featuring vivid depictions of nudity (it caused quite a stir when it was unveiled around 1900). Smaller break-out rooms are available, too. All rooms are fitted with state-of-the-art sound and lighting. The museum’s on-site brasserie is happy to offer catering for your event.

Here visual art connects people in a sustainable way

MSK wants to be a model for socially and ecologically conscious museum operations internationally. In 2020, MSK was the first museum to join the Voka Charter Sustainable Business (VCDO). MSK launched 'art chat cards', engaging people with different language backgrounds to start conversations about art and identity. Through Enchanté VZW, visitors can also gift a deferred MSK ticket to those in need.

In the heart of the museum district

The MSK is part of a lively museum district, which also includes pioneering contemporary arts museum S.M.A.K., an attractive city museum, a brand-new university museum and a freely accessible botanic garden. Nearby Citadel Park is a nice spot for an al fresco lunch.
Just a short walk away is Ghent’s pedestrian-friendly historic city centre (the largest in Belgium, in fact). Stroll along cobbled streets, pop into lively bars and restaurants, or visit the city’s many landmarks – such as St Bavo’s Cathedral, where you’ll discover Van Eyck’s Altarpiece in an amazing new exhibition. Meeting at MSK... means making memories!
